Dr. Chen, Hao Zhu, male, was born on November 6, 1924 in Hong Kong and is native of Jiangmen city, Guangdong province. He Graduated from Department of Medicine, National Chung Cheng Medical College in 1949 and took courses for advanced studies at the Chinese Academy of Medical Science in 1957. Elected to be the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1997. He is an expert in diagnosis and treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases, and one of the founders of invasive diagnostic and therapeutic technique for cardiovascular diseases in China.

Currently, he serves as professor of Internal Medicine and advisor of doctoral thesis in Zhong-Shan Hospital, Shanghai Medical College (former Shanghai Medical University), of Fudan University, honorary director of Shanghai Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, and the director of the Collaborating Center for Research and Training in Cardiovascular Diseases of World Health Organization, member of Expert Committee of National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, China, as well as chairman of National Examination and Approval Committee of Clinical Teaching Materials for Medical Colleges and Universities. He is also the advisor of the Chinese Journal of Cardiology, South China Journal of Cardiovascular Diseases, the Chinese Journal of Practical Internal Medicine, as well as associate chief editor, member or advisor of the editorial board of other 18 journals. He is member of the International Society of Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy, the Heart Rhythm Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, the World Hypertension League, the International Atherosclerosis Society and the International Chinese Heart Health Network.

He engaged in the clinical, educational and researched work on cardiovascular medicine for more than 65 years and is a well-known cardiologist. He did outstanding clinical and educational work and won merit citation for 3 times as well as 2 First Class Prizes of Educational Achievement from the Shanghai Municipal Government accordingly. He has made great contribution to the researches on epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases, cardiac pacing and cardioversion for treatment of serious cardiac arrhythmias, integration of Traditional and Western Medicine in treatment of coronary heart disease, risk factors as well as thrombosis and thrombolitic mechanism of myocardial infarction, and blood lipid levels among healthy Chinese people. He performed the first selective coronary arteriography in China in the year 1973 and initiated the researches on intravascular ultrasound imaging for diognosis of coronary arterial atherosclerosis in China in the year 1991. He successfully rescued “quinidine syncope” patients by means of intravenous dripping of extraordinarily large dose of isoprenaline since 1976. He was granted 2 Second Class Prizes of National Scientific Technological Progress, and 6 First Class Prizes of Scientific Technological Progress from the Shanghai Municipal Government, Chinese Ministry of Health and the Chinese National Science and Technology Conference respectively. He won the “Excellent Research Work Award for 40 Years Service in University” from Chinese Ministry of Education in 1990, and the “Award of Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Health Care” from the State Council of China in 1991.

He is the author of more than 370 papers, author and chief editor of 12 books including: Text Book of Internal Medicine, Chinese Encyclopedia of Medicine-Cardiology, Practice of Internal Medicine, Practice of Cardiology, Clinical Application of Cardiac Catheterization, Differential Diagnosis of Cardiovascular Diseases, Atlas of Electrocardiography on Lantern Slides, Successful Rescue of 100 cases, New Theory and Technology of Cardiovascular Diseases, Hypertension and Related Diseases, Diagnosis and Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases, as well as Intensive Care Therapy of Cardiac Emergency Cases. He is the contributor of other 31 books and chief translator of 7 books.

Twenty four graduate students were awarded master’s degree and other 52 were awarded doctor’s degree from Shanghai Medical University and Fudan University under his direction.
