Xiangdong Wang, MD, PhD, member of Acadamia Europaea, is the distinguished professor of Medicine at Fudan University, Chief Officer of Scientists at Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, and Director of Shanghai Institute of Clinical Bioinformatics and Fudan University Center of Clinical Bioinformatics.

His main research is focused on single cell sequencing, clinical bioinformatics, disease-specific biomarkers, lung chronic diseases, cancer immunology, and molecular & cellular therapies. He is the author of more than 300 scientific publications.

In the early 1990s, Prof. Wang took the lead in the exploration of the combined transplantation of hepatocytes and pancreatic beta cells for the treatment of acute liver failure, providing a basis for cell therapy in organ failure. He was the first in the world to discover and confirm that in the occurrence and development of diseases, intestinal pathogens from intestinal cavity translocate to extrenteral organs, which was clinically proved more than 30 years later. In the past 15 years, he has led a team at Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, discovering and confirming the morphological structure and molecular regulation of human airway and lung network cells.

In 2022, Prof. Wang was awarded the 5th Fok Ying-Tung Prize The World Outstanding Chinese Doctor Award, in recognition of his social responsibility in promoting academic exchanges among Chinese doctors around the world. He initiated and founded the World Association of Chinese Oncologists. As an executive member of the International Committee of the American Thoracic Society, chairman of the Chinese Precision Medicine Committee and the Gene Testing Association, he has made contributions to the promotion and popularization of cutting-edge technology and advanced clinical diagnosis and treatment knowledge.

He is devoted to the development of clinical translational medicine and clinical precision medicine. Based on the Clinical Precision Medicine Center established in Zhongshan Hospital, he established an alliance on the integrative cooperation on the clinical gene testing in the Yangtze River Delta, providing tailored treatment for patients, and co-founded the International Journal of Translational Medicine with Prof. Eliaz Zerhouni, former Chairman of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Together with Prof. Dennis Liotta, he initiated and founded the Journal of Clinical Bioinformatics, which has promoted the development of this field in Shanghai and even in China.

This year, 50 expatriates from 15 countries were honored with the Shanghai Magnolia Silver Award in recognition of their contributions to the city’s development.
